First Aid, BLS, PALS and ACLS Training Lead to Military Lives Saved

About 92 percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims die before reaching the hospital, but statistics prove that if more people knew cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), more lives could be saved. Immediate CPR can double, or even triple, a victim’s chance of survival.

But what happens when – by nature of the environment in which a rescue takes place – the time between the rescue and hospital arrival is extended? This is often the case in a military-based emergency medical response.

According to a study published in the September 2010 issue of the Emergency Medicine Journal, “In a military setting, pre-hospital times may be extended due to geographical or operational issues.” 

Because of this difference between military and civilian emergency medical response, researchers sought to determine whether or not military emergency response dictated an additional need for a doctor’s skill-set.

Researchers found that “a relatively small proportion of missions require interventions beyond the capability of well-trained military paramedics; the indirect benefits of a physician are more difficult to quantify.” 

As military paramedics remain the go-to sources for military rescue, the need for ongoing education related to lifesaving skills – such as those learned in Basic Life Support (BLS) courses – becomes even more vital. 

However, it’s also important to acknowledge that – regardless of your assignment – learning lifesaving skills can have a lifetime impact within the military, civilian careers and in communities across the U.S.
