Five Nursing Specialties that Require Pediatric Certification

If you plan to pursue a career in nursing, the specialty you choose will dictate what certifications you need. Many nursing jobs require pediatric advanced life support (PALS) certification. Here are five PALS-related nursing specialties to consider.

1. Pediatric Nursing
Pediatric nurses are trained to care for infants, children and adolescents. Pediatric nurses often specialize in a particular medical area, and work in a variety of professional environments, from primary care physicians’ offices to hospitals. Because they specialize in the treatment of children, PALS certification is generally a job requirement.

2. Emergency Nursing
Emergency nurses are trained to treat patients in emergency and critical care situations that require the ability to identify life-threatening factors and provide treatment accordingly. Nurses specializing in emergency care are trained to care for all age groups. PALS training includes protocol for life-saving procedures, making pediatric certification a necessity.

3. Trauma Nursing
Nurses in this specialty are trained to treat patients of all ages. Their main responsibilities include maintaining vital signs and preventing complications and death of a patient. Like emergency nurses, trauma nurses are often required to perform life-saving procedures on children, which makes PALS a beneficial certification to have.

4. Camp Nursing
Camp nurses provide medical care for children at summer camps. Their responsibilities generally include providing daily medicine and treatments for children with various medical conditions. They also may need to provide first aid and emergency care for children, so PALS certification may be preferred or required for employment.

5. Domestic Violence Nursing
Professionals trained in domestic violence nursing work in clinics or women’s shelters and are trained to treat victims of abuse. They are trained to treat patients of all ages, but victims of domestic abuse are often children. Pediatric certification allows domestic violence nurses to provide the best care for these victims.
