Going Above and Beyond: Pediatric Nurse Career Success Stories

A pediatric nurse career is far from boring. The job is fast-paced, demanding, and often times, stressful. And for some nurses, duty may call at an unexpected time, even when they are not on the job. Here are three success stories of nurses who went above and beyond their responsibilities as healthcare professionals.

Nurse sustains injury to save toddler from choking
Marietta Sousis, an Oklahoma registered nurse, was visiting a local apartment complex looking for a place to rent, when a panicked mother ran into the leasing office – her 3-year-old daughter was choking. Without hesitation, Sousis rushed to the woman’s car to help the child. While running to the car, Sousis fell, but immediately got up and continued to the car. She was able to clear the girl’s airway before paramedics arrived. Afterward, Sousis discovered that she had fractured her ankle when she fell; an injury that she said was far worth it to save a child’s life.

School nurse saves 11-year-old girl suffering from cardiac arrest
When an 11-year-old girl in Omro, Wis., suffered from cardiac arrest during P.E. class, her teacher immediately called 911 and got the school nurse, Wendy Roesler. The nurse immediately started performing CPR, while the school custodian rushed to bring her an automated external defibrillator (AED). Roesler was able to use the AED to resuscitate the girl. Without the quick thinking of her teacher and the swift actions of Roesler the girl likely would not have survived.

Off-duty nurses save boy from drowning
Susan Kalucis, a certified nurse practitioner, and her friend Lisa Crea, also a nurse, were enjoying a day at their local pool in Cleveland, Ohio, when they noticed that something was wrong. They saw the lifeguard pull a 4-year-old boy from the pool – he was blue, unresponsive and without a pulse. Kalucis and Crea immediately stepped in to perform CPR. They were able to revive the boy, who was then taken by paramedics to the hospital to be treated.
