Using ACLS Sample Questions and Other Strategic Studying Techniques for Test-Taking Success

Tests demonstrate your level of ability as it relates to a certain task or topic. Therefore, doing well on licensing and certification tests that apply to your career field is particularly important.
By completing a certification exam with flying colors, you will demonstrate to your employer – or future employers – that you are fully capable of completing the necessary tasks and steps of advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and other lifesaving measures.

The Study Guides and Strategies offers the following four tips for test-taking success:

  • Read directions carefully. Though reading directions may seem to be an unimportant task, misreading a question could result in an incorrect answer even though you know all the relevant information.
  • Answer questions strategically. Start with the easy questions you can answer without thinking too much or doing too much work. Then move on to the slightly more difficult or time-consuming questions. Leave the most difficult questions for last. With this strategy, you will at least answer many of the questions instead of getting stuck on a difficult question and wasting valuable time.
  • Arrive early for tests. Minimizing stress by making a list of everything you need and arriving at the test-taking site in plenty of time can keep you relaxed and focused on passing the test at hand.
  • Utilize ACLS sample questions. Another great way to prepare for the ACLS exam is with ACLS sample questions. Health Ed Solutions’ free practice ACLS quiz offers ACLS sample questions in three five-question sample tests. Full ACLS certification and recertification practice exams, both complete with 50 timed multiple-choice questions, are available for $35. A portion of this fee can be applied to the purchase price of the full certification course.

Here are two sample questions to give you an idea of the types of questions you may see on the practice quiz and test.

  • While treating a patient in persistent ventricular fibrillation, you consider using vasopressin. Which of the following guidelines for the use of vasopressin is true?
    • Give vasopressin 40 U IV every 3 to 5 minutes.
    • Give vasopressin as an alternative to epinephrine.
    • Give vasopressin rather than epinephrine, because vasopressin is a better vasoconstrictor. Give vasopressin as an antiarrhythmic to attempt to convert the ventricular waveform.
  • A man in his 20s, who was a spectator at a sporting event, has collapsed in the restroom. He is unresponsive and has no pulse or respirations. As you enter the room, someone reports having just called 911 and another person races out to obtain an AED just down the hall. What is indicated next?
    • Give the man 2 rescue breaths and begin CPR.
    • Keep the man comfortable while waiting for the AED.
    • Ask if anyone knows the man’s medical history.
    • Look for evidence of drug use.
