Saving Lives On and Off the Clock: The Latest Pediatric Nursing Success Stories

Pediatric nurses are responsible for maintaining the health and safety of children on a daily basis. In 2011 alone, there were numerous stories in which nurses saved lives both on and off the clock. Here are three of the latest pediatric nursing success stories. 

Off-duty nurse saves boy from drowning at pool

Pamela Glennon was spending her day off at her local pool in Staten Island, NY, when she noticed lifeguards pulling an unconscious boy from the water. Glennon rushed to their side, and helped them perform CPR. She was able to get the boy breathing and responsive by the time paramedics arrived to take him to the hospital for treatment.

School nurse saves seventh-grade football player during game

During a middle school football game in Azle, Texas, a seventh-grade player suddenly collapsed on the field. When his coaches ran on to the field, they discovered that he was unresponsive and began to perform CPR. Rita White, a nurse who worked with the district, ran onto the field to assist the coaches. In addition to helping them perform CPR, White used an automated external defibrillator (AED) to resuscitate the boy. The timely use of an AED is a key factor in cardiac arrest emergencies, and White’s swift actions greatly contributed to the boy’s survival.

Pediatric nurse helps rescue and treat girl after stage collapse

Indianapolis State Fair attendees had a terrifying experience when strong winds caused a stage to collapse prior to a scheduled music performance. The tragic accident killed five people, but a few brave heroes within the crowd helped save countless others that were injured. One such hero was Natalie Prater, a pediatric nurse who attended the event. In addition to helping a woman and her 3-year-old daughter escape from the wreckage, Prater was able to treat the child’s severe wounds so she could be safely transported to the hospital. In this story, one of the most touching of the latest pediatric nursing success stories, the woman and her daughter both recovered from the accident.
